About Ecstatic Dance

Ecstatic dance is a general term that refers to dancing the way that you want to in a sacred space without a lot of self-consciousness and being respectful of others around you.

To help establish that space, we follow a few guidelines:

If the space allows it, it’s best to dance without shoes on as it feels a little more connected to the Earth and that has to be good.

Keeping talking to a minimum increases the ability of people to connect inside. Think of it as a moving meditation. Some sounds are great, but too much talking can spoil the mood for you and the people around you.

Perfumes and colognes can tend to distract people, so it’s best to not use heavy scents.

Personal Boundaries

One of the main reasons people don’t come out to dance is because they are intimidated by the social interactions with others. It’s all right to dance with others if they are open to that and are looking for an interactive kind of dance. However, most people are pretty shy about dancing, so it’s best to hold back a bit until you’re pretty sure that someone wants you to be dancing with them. A simple, nonverbal way of telling someone that you’d rather dance alone is to simply bring your hands together in a prayer position in front of you and do a little nod or bow. It’s the yoga way of saying “Namaste”, which is “My Spirit Acknowledges Yours.”

Ecstatic dance is done in a sacred space, which you can think of the same as when you would go into a church or temple or synagogue. So, be respectful of other people and the prayerful state that they’re trying to get into. Refrain from taking photographs or video without people’s permission and use common sense in helping to maintain the sacredness of the space.
